Recently, we have seen death and destruction flashed into our television screens, in our newspapers and across the airwaves. War, earthquakes, terrorism all have reeked havoc on the world's populations - particularly those in low income nations - the most fragile, the most vulnerable again seem to be hardest hit. For some it may feel like we are living in a world out-of-control - fear and uncertainty abound. But do we have to sit back and take the world that others construct for us? Around the world we also hear the stories of courageous individuals and communities who are endeavouring to design a future for all that is based on the principles of equity and humanity - is the world that you would like to be in?
My question to you as the young people of the world is:
What kind of future do you want?

Hey Karen
I come from Kalumburu, up in the top end of WA. I'd like to do bush riding and make bush track, and maybe have a picnic out in the bush with my friend and have fun at the same time.
to do this we would have a commety meting with all the commety people and maybe get some of kids ideas.
I could make a survey up and get someone in kalumburu to ask the question foe me.
I hope that they will do this for to make my commety beater.

Hi Nick
Sounds interesting and great stuff- but will you get a chance to do it before the end of the term? Maybe for this project you could write us and maybe draw images or have photographs of the differences between your experience living in Hamilton and what you would be doing if you were still in WA? Also how did you come to be here? How do you think the experience of Monivae is going to impact on your Future and/or the future of your community?
Lots of things to think about - hope this helps Cheers Karen

Hello Karen,
I'm Emily from Heywood and District Secondary College. I'm one of only a few kids at my School who is proud of my home town. Well I have chosen the Fitzroy River in Heywood as my project. I have chosen it because I’ve lived in Heywood my whole life and have had the pleaser of growing up beside the river by: Playing games out the back, Fishing, Yabbying, Getting muddy, Having water fights and just everyday life with great scenery. I have decided to research this project by relations who have lived here for years, the internet and the sign near the river. I have decided to do a power point presentation and going as soon I know its okay to do. I have chosen this so that the world can see the place I most care about.
Thanks Emily

Hay Karen,
I’m Michelle from Heywood and my project is on my 2800 acres farm. I chose this cause I think that it would be nice for people over seas and elsewhere to learn about how I live how we get around when it is really wet or just dry how many sheep, cows, horses, cats, dogs, family members est. To find my info I will go round the 3 farms and take pics and ask my dad and maybe my grandad. I might put maps in if I can find them. I think my farm may be a great learning divide and loads of people can learn from it?

Dear Karen Malone,
Our name’s are Shani and Sigourney and for our unesco project we have chosen Shani’s farm because we have heard some very interesting things like:
In 1932 it was blown down by a tornado and the people in the neighbour-hood helped to re-build it.
So please write back to me and tell us if you think our idea is good because we would really like to find out a lot more about Shani’s farm.
For our research I am going to interview people that used to live there and take some photographs so that people in other countries can see what it is like to live on a farm.
Yours truly, Shani and Sigourney

My project is about the OP shop I chose it because it has been there for many month and many years. The OP shop is designed to raise many for the community. The OP shop is an excellent place to get stuff to dress up for special occasion for school sports and also swimming.

Hi Karen,
I'm Rebecca and I'm going to do my project on the Tyrendarra Oval because it’s the central part the Tyrendarra community.
I will focus on the history and interview my pop how has been apart of the football club for 50 or so years. I will also write about why it's important to me, and may even included some maps of were it is situated.
love always Rebecca.

Hi Rebecca
Great!! Sounds like a very worthwhile project - remember to include images so we can see the oval in the context of the community and also your pop.
Best wishes karen

Hi Payton
That is wonderful - a think looking at the aspect of how the op shop contrinutes to teh community both in terms of money, but also teh role it plays for social networking (the people who come to work together in the shop or use the shop as a meeting place). Its history and interviewing some of the key organisers would be useful for this. The question of why and how op shops have evolved in communities in an interesting one. Maybe you can also do some research into how many op shops exist in the district and the variety of community organisations they support.
Cheers Karen (ps include some pics and your story!!
